F72EXR exposure problems

I am having problems with the automatic exposure settings on my F72EXR as landscapes are being underexposed. The first photo taken with a Canon Ixus 500 illustrates the scene being photographed while the second taken with the F72EXR does not do it justice.

Is this typical of the F72EXR in SP landscape and is it necessary to go into manual to get decent pictures?

PS Many thanks to Captain Kremmen "How to do a photoblog" (see Help) for telling me how to get more than one picture into my blog.

Your Comparing two Different cameras one is Twice the Price of the Other so the 72 as done a great job would suggest that you play with it and in Manual you will see it improve as you get to know it , I would also suggest putting this in the Discusion forum and not here

It's not surprising that using the same scene mode on two different makes of cameras gives different results. You'll find familiarising yourself with the manual controls on the fuji 72 will produce more reliable results. Also adjust the EV for the scene to avoid under or over- exposure if you need to.

Although, the manual for the 72 gives advice on when to adjust the EV, it is not comprehensive. For example, on an overcast day, you may find it better to open up a stop ( +1EV ) to add a bit of brightness to the scene. Just watch the LCD when you adjust the EV. This is the best way to judge which way to adjust exposure.

Sometimes of course it is better to deliberately under expose for dramatic effect.

Once you adjust the EV, it remains at this setting until you change it again. If in your opinion the camera consistently under exposes, determine the EV setting which you think best and leave it at that except for exceptionally bright scenes, dark scenes or backlit subjects when some adjustment of the EV is needed. If you don't fancy using the manual settings which allows you to adjust the exposure, try using the EXR mode which automatically detects the type of scene but still lets you adjust the EV.

Personally, I thought your Ixus photo looked a little bright. I preferred the Fuji one. It all comes down to a matter of personal taste.

I also prefer the second shot and I'm not saying that because I'm a fuji fan either. The poster above is correct in that it's all down to taste.

Saying that I do wish Fuji would put an exposure bracketing option in there as it could be useful. You might find a tweak on white balance can help as well or take a custom reading and use that. I find the F70 a bit green bias and cool for daylight.

I also thought the first photo was the fuji one, then realised it was the canon. I think the second photo has richer colours. I was a little worried at first as I also have a fuji EXR72.

I've had an F70exr since last summer.  I suggest you use manual Dr for outside shots and the Sn for inside shots and forget the rest of the features.

The F70/72 produces astonishing pictures for a little camera in these exr settings but the rest of the settings are no better than an average compact.  It will be interesting to see what the new F300exr will do when it is released in September.
