Weird Lighthouse
I came across this picture the other day. Couldn't find out anything about it though. Is this a case of photo manipulation, or does it really exist?
On looking closely at the spiral staircase within the screw, it is the same size all the way up, and is the same repeated pattern, but that is the nature of staircase of this type. The screw could be repeated and made smaller as it reaches the top. It also has the same doorway if that is what it is, but getting progressively smaller towards the top. The shadow of the horizontal bar appears to be the same both times too, but modern architects would build this into a design anyway!
I believe that it is manipulation, because if I was designing it, I would have given the attached cottage spiral chimneys too.
What do you think?

I found the picture here

I was googling pictures of lighthouses after seeing the famous picture by the French photographer Jean Guichard on the T.V. programme Coast a couple of nights ago. You can read about it here

You can buy prints of it for 189.50 dollars! I wish I had taken it!

looks superimposed to me. No sign of any sea. Looks like its in densely wooded rural setting. if you try to goto the image source it is closed down but it was a photoshop contest of some sort.

It's definitely fake. If you look at the wall on the spiral the is a shadow of what looks like a rail of some sort, but no shadow of the spiral stairs.
It's good though.

its definately fake. pretty weird looking. i think it could be a model of some sort, or clever layering on photoshop.

I have seen this around myself. There is a Photoshop tutorial HERE
It may not be the same lighthouse used in the tutorial, which is THIS one, but it is more than likely based on it.
Edit: I had a look around and it looks to me that the lighthouse in question is this one. Pigeon Point about 50 miles south of San Francisco. HERE

Thanks Kidder - great research.
The tutorial is great. The techniques he used show about 80% of all most of us would ever want to know about using Photoshop. I have spent many hours going through tutorials and trying to learn various techniques which I have never used, (in effect I've wasted a hell of lot of time!) but this tutorial includes most of the intermediate tools that are worth learning such as layers and masks etc.
For those who are struggling with the complexities of Photoshop, I can recommend the tutorial that Kidder has found. Just don't try learning it in one go though. Do in sections and apply it to your own shots - not just lighthouses.
A great book that I picked up at one of the cut-price bookshops in Norwich is called "Photoshop In A Weekend" by Mark Cleghorn. Published by Photographers' Institute Press (166 High Street, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 1XU) I got it for about £4.00 but published price is £16.99. It is based upon CS3, but all the techniques can be applied to any version of Photoshop. Google it.

OK, my slant.
The tonal values of shadow on the 'screw' are wrong when compared to those of the actual 'light' section and the house roof. There isnt enough graduation on the outer facing walls of the screw in comparison to the heavy shadows on the inner walls where the spiral staircase is.
Some areas of the screw in particular look too clean, particularly the white upper left edges of the screw wall.
The lower section of staircase immediately above the house roof and behind the chimney looks far too defined.
I don't think its a model, but a case of heavy retouching/manipulation.

I found this one, St Augustines. The building design seems to be fairly common on American lighthouses. i think the spiral paint job would have helped the manipulation a bit too.

Clive, I'd even be tempted to say same lighthouse, different angle. the cottage (what can be seen of it in the shot you found) looks identical? Why change the thread of the spiral round though... hmmm
