X competition - Why They Won
As promised, here's a short blog explaining why the three winners in the recent X competition were chosen. As usual, Gladys and I spent a long time deciding on the top three. The standard was high with some really interesting interpretations of the theme. Many thanks to all those who took the time to enter and our congratulations go to the three winners. If you weren't successful this time around, perhaps the following will help...

1st place. This shot ticks all the boxes. First, it's an excellent interpretation of the brief that's clearly the result of some excellent observation. Second, it's technically spot on. The focusing is perfect, the exposure accurate and any post production that's been carried out has been done to enhance the final shot, not detract from it. Finally, the frozen water droplets add a crucial extra dimension. Take them away and it would still be a good shot, but with them, it's striking, eye-catching and a worthy winner. Well done!

2nd place. A lovely shot. Sunrises (or sunsets for that matter) don't come any better than this both technically and from a composition perspective. A perfect silhouette against a lovely warm sky and bang on theme with the Xs underneath the pier. It could be argued that perhaps there's a little bit too much of the sea in the foreground, but we felt that enhanced the shot, reflecting the bright orange sky. A well deserved second place

3rd place. As well as being bang on theme, what appealed to us most here is the bold cropping. Many photographers would try and get all the starfish in the shot, but that would dilute the composition in the process. Instead, by going in close and not being afraid to crop aspects out, it's a really strong shot. The background and lighting add extra embellishment, too. Great stuff!

Thanks Fred.......Its always interesting to get an opinion on what makes a picture tick the right boxes, especially when its one of your own. I have always gone for the tight shots and on occaisions been criticised for overcropping an image or two. I decided to go for the diagonal composition and I thought that it worked well. I am delighted that you thought so too.
These blogs are very illuminating for all of us and its good of you to take the time to explain your thought processes. Yet another nice little touch to enhance this site.
