Yorkshire animal park meet Jan 2012

Today several of the guys n gals from my site and here met up at the Yorkshire wildlife park, in Doncaster. The low winter sun made for some amazing natural light both early and late on in the day. These are a couple of the big cat shots (quick edits) from the day.

I got these basically because I was observing the way Richard was working. That's what these things are all about for me. IMHO you can learn more seeing others at work, than you can ever learn reading books etc.

Added a couple more to the collection Wink

I did not know the Serengetti was in Yorkshire.  Great photos, it certainly looks like the plains of Africa (or India.  No tigers in Africa except in Tarzan films!)

There was a window of about 20-30 mins, where the natural light was just amazing. Sun was just starting to get low in the sky, and it just turned the lion enclosure in to a whole new photo opportunity. So glad me and Richard went round for a second bash with the lions, when we did. Smile

Hi Chris

That 5th down shot is the best of the bunch for me.  I see what ya mean about the light.  What a cracking set of shots.  I know also what you mean about looking at others and how they work.  On the few meets I have been on,  I always wondered why they were watching me!!! Lol

A super photoblog Chris....See ya at the NEC in March

Well done Chris.

The light certainly worked for you. They are all very good captures (Pardon the pun)

And the animals look really well considering it's midwinter.

Monty.

A super set of images Chris. I've seen it on Look North a couple of times and it now looks as if a trip down the A1 would be a good idea. Thanks for posting.

Wow, wow, wow and wow.  Absolutely fantastic pics Chris.  I have had a quick look at the park's website, and will definitely have to go.  The missus will want to come too - she loves tigers!

Think my fave pic is the first lioness - she looks so regal.

Number 4 is still my fave Chris, having viewed it large the eyes have it for me!!  It's a shame it can't be expanded here, so I hope you don't mind if I put the gallery link to that on here for other people to view large and see what I mean....

Been back for the 2nd time now that issues have been sorted.  My fave is still the 5th one down.  That light is perfect for this shoot.  Like Fred says, lighting is very important.  The digit on the shutter too of course.

Cheers.

LMAO @Jen. I think it may be a hidden Zulu warrior hut LMAO

This was the 2nd attempt with these Laurie, and myself and Richard Lindley dropped on the golden hour (actually lasted about 20-30 mins), just as the sun was getting low in the sky, and clipping the top of the mound they were on. We were like kids in a sweet shop, as it happened, just as we got back round to the lions again.

What impressed me more than anything, was how my 300mm zoom on a crop sensor, stood up against a 500mm f2.8 prime, on a full frame body (Richards rig)

This is Richard's shot as the keeper kindly called the tigers name, so we got eye contact http://www.flickr.com/photos/scruffywhippet/6700684851/

And this is mine, taken at exactly the same time http://www.flickr.com/photos/massive-photography/6742548911/
