The Hardest Hit Disability March

The Venue .. Victoria Embankment .. the cause .. To fight cuts to Disability Living Allowance and Adult Social Care ..the date 11th May 2011.

The Hardest Hit march on Westminster

The Police were using a "Light touch" approach to the almost 5000 disabled people and their carers and support organisations.

It all kicked off with a rally and speeches from Jane Asher and Liam Byrne (shadow work and pensions Minister) among others .Both very passionate people . The Minister for Disabled people refused to attend as she had to listen to Prime Ministers Question Time apparently.

This lady , as you can see put a cardboard box covered in slogans on her wheelchair to highlight the fact that when she loses the mobility part of DLA for being in a care home she will, in effect, be imprisoned in her home.

She was very popular with the Media and Campaigns people ... who were queuing up to talk to her through the flap in her box.

Representatives from all over the country and from many organisations marched onwards towards the House of Commons

Westminster in the background signified the half way point

The cause of all the problems ...Central Government

The media were there in force trying to get that "video-bite", Sound-bite, or image of the day

More banners :)

The RNIB banner has the words "shafted" in Braille and the people were being constantly asked what it said by press and individuals ..

The end of the March .. and what a struggle for me to get to the end , despite it deliberately being a very short march . Hopefully this has raised the issue to a wider public and get the press to take a better view of Disability and long term illness than they do now.

Woke up in severe pain as i do most days , but had to make the event . Have made many appointments and arrangements to meet people , and had to cancel due to illness.I was determined to make this one .

Checked my battery on the camera , made sure there was a memory card , and headed to the Train station.

Met people at the Cleopatra's Needle and my legs were tired already.

Many many groups were already there , all to fight the tirade of cuts that will see Disabled people and those with long term health conditions struggle to have a life...

Here are a few images from the day .

It was the largest ever Disability March in the UK

Hi Richard

An almost journalistic approach to this one.  Good on yer for making the attempt to get out there and add your own weight to the protest.  Let's hope people listen to what you had to say.

Good luck to you.

Good one, Richard. Let's just hope it does some good. It's about time the government picked on people with money and without problems for a change. Well done and thanks for posting.

Best wishes, Mike

Well done for fighting the cause and bringing us some images of the day Rich. Would have loved to have been there myself.

Well done Richard - not just for a great blog but also for raising the awareness of a truly genuine and worthy protest.

I really like the style of your blog, as Steve says very journalistic and an honest representation too.

Very best of luck to you and thanks for posting.

It's always the case that those with least clout and most need are first to suffer when the Government knife swings to make the cuts....I don't think we're likely to see the Bankers and Industry Fatcats organising a protest march...they'll be too busy organising another trip abroad to their 'other' homes

Things are starting to look very similar to the injustices of the last blue rinse period of power....hopefully the voters will see sense and make it a much shorter stay this time!

Well done for making the effort to make a difference and for helping to make others more fortunate more aware of the situation and possibly bringing it a little closer to home for them than it just being yet another National Media event

Cheers Stuart

Nice one Rich!! Speaking as one who now struggles to walk 100yards without severe pain and extreme difficulty and still being refused DLA I would like to say a big thank you to you and all your fellow marchers.  Let them live just 24 hours in our shoes and see what they think then!!

Just saw your blog, nice one! I was there too with one of my workmates, and it was a lot larger than had been imagined, so well done to everyone who turned up. Great blog showing some of the scenes. Did you get to meet your MP after the march?

Through the union I was able to get up for both this and on the 26th March, although was limited in how far I could go, never made it to Hyde Park unfortunately on the 26th.

As Vivian has found, passing the contract for dealing with DLA applications to private firms like ATOS has had a devastating effect on those in need of support.

Hey Rich, good blog, I wasnt aware of anything like this having happened, the photos are great and shows how peaceful it was, unlike some others that occur.
