Thanks for the comments.
I couldn't have taken this shot two years ago as my equipment just wasn't fast enough.
Long lenses don't give me the detail I would like and short lenses mean having to pan and focus at ridiculous speeds. The lenses I had just weren't up to it and you really have to be careful not to hit someone near by in the head with the lens as you swing rapidly with the shot. On this occasion I was lucky not to be surrounded by other people. It really helps.

beautiful pic ray cracking detail. dont think you can get better than a bird in flight. I like you two years ago am lacking kit. well i say that i poses the bigma but the one without the is so flight pics are very difficult. spot on.
All the best

Hi Kibbyfat.
Some people seem to be able to make the bigma work for birds in flight and on a good day so could I but it was really hard work and I found the best pictures with it where below 300mm for birds so in the end I gave up with it. It is really heavy. For air shows the bigma is great once set up. Also getting the bigma to produce 1/1600s or above at full reach needs lots of light. I did like and hate the lens at the same time so I feel your frustration. Good luck though and don't give up trying.
Viv thanks I didn't know I'd got to the scroller.
Maybe this time it will last more than around 10 hours Lol.
Everyone else, thanks a lot for the support.

Great shot, excellent detail and sharpness
trample a member since day one, (very active) prefer to remain in the background these days, use mainly Canon equipment for serious stuff but always use Fuji for work

Hiyah Ray
Smashing shot, have you cloned out some tethers? I just noticed the odd "cloud" at the right of the legs. It's a cracking shot whatever.
Cheers

Hi Steve.
It's from the same set as the one coming into land on the lawn Steve. You can see there it has leg collars only.
It's not on the original but showed up when I lowered the highlights. I didn't notice it.
I'll have to clean it up though for the club comp. Thanks for spotting it.
There was only me and the trainer there that afternoon and he only flew two falcons.
I didn't think I'd get any shots at all. They are so fast and not that big. Trying to spot them coming in is bad enough let alone tracking them.
From that point Dave and Cesar you are right, first you have to track them accurately for the focus to get a lock. The bird came past about 30 feet away when I got that shot but notice the shutter speed. Also notice the lack of background movement blur despite the speed it came in at. You can't get that amount of light for that shutter speed without a wide aperture. I'm not even sure all DSLRs go up to 1/8000s so equipment did play it's part but I don't shoot bursts for this, just carefully timed presses of the shutter button. So let's call it 50/50.
Thanks to veryone else.
It's always a nice unexpected and a rare pleasure to reach the scroller.
